Energy Update: Oil Prices Under Pressure

Oil prices continue to fall after yesterday’s U.S. Energy Department report showed that the average amount of fuel products supplied by refiners fell 7.9% y/y in the past four weeks.

Weakening demand looks set to keep oil prices under pressure ahead of the next OPEC meeting.

The January Nymex future is currently down 70 cents on the day at $46.09 per barrel, off lows of 45.30, while Brent crude is down 71 cents at $44.75.

Natural Gas Closes Down 1.1% to 6.352

After Natural Gas shot higher in sympathy with crude, it repeatedly bounced off at 6.48. A spike in volume just after lunch sent Natural Gas tumbling into negative territory and it closed down for the second straight day.

Crude Closes Down 0.4% at 46.77

After rising up to the 48 handle after inventories showed an unexpected fall, Crude never tested those highs again. Crude had trouble picking a direction and frequently jumped between positive and negative territory. For the second straight day, Crude’s intraday low (46.26) was the lowest in three and a half years.
